No 1 Brick
Cottages is a 19th Century Grade 2 listed building, considered
to be a perfect example of an agricultural workers dwelling of that
period.
With a growing family, the owner desperately needed more space and wanted
to continue living in the village. To move up to a bigger house in the
local area was beyond the owner’s means, therefore we were appointed to
investigate extending the property. Our design solution was to build a
2-storey, timber framed extension, in a style distinctly different to
avoid mimicking the original form. Built to the side of the old house and
connected by a glazed link, the extension comprises a new living room on
the ground floor and master bedroom with en suite bathroom on the first
floor.
The extension was built over an existing pond and with heavy clay and
difficult ground conditions, pile foundations were used to provide a
simple and economical structure.
